UK to host G20 summit in Manchester in 2027
Global leaders, including Donald Trump, are set to gather in Manchester next year as the UK prepares to host the G20 summit of advanced economies in November 2027, reports BritPanorama.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham, a former mayor of Greater Manchester, emphasized that invitations will be extended to all G20 members, including Vladimir Putin’s Russia, amid ongoing diplomatic tensions following the invasion of Ukraine.
World leaders such as Xi Jinping of China and Javier Milei from Argentina will also receive invitations to the summit. Burnham expressed hope that the city’s historical significance in opposing the slave trade would resonate particularly with Trump during his visit.
Preparations for the summit commenced prior to Burnham’s tenure, but he has since championed Manchester as a meeting place, establishing the No 10 North initiative there.
The presidency of the G20 is currently held by the US and will transition to the UK after the leaders’ summit at Trump National Doral resort in Miami this December.
Scheduled to convene at the Manchester Central convention complex, a repurposed railway station, the summit will also see other events hosted across the UK throughout the year.
This announcement follows a historic joint operation between the UK and US, which successfully launched the first torpedo from an unmanned undersea drone, enhancing Western maritime security capabilities.
Last week, Britain confirmed it would provide military support to Saudi Arabia against Iran-backed Houthis, marking Burnham’s first military authorization as prime minister. En route to New York for the UN General Assembly, he revealed an agreement with Riyadh to supply defensive air-to-air refuelling.
This blend of diplomatic engagement and military action underscores the UK’s proactive role on both economic and security fronts as it navigates a complex global landscape.
