Kimi Antonelli tipped as future champion by Marc Surer
Kimi Antonelli has been hailed by former Formula One star Marc Surer, who has tipped the young driver to become a “future champion”. The Italian currently leads the Drivers’ Championship by 81 points heading into the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after a recent victory in Spain, reports BritPanorama.
At just 20 years old, Antonelli has dominated the competition, boasting eight wins and twelve podium finishes in only his second season in Formula One. Surer believes that Antonelli’s performance this year indicates a strong potential for success as he navigates the challenges of the sport.
“I think when we see a coming champion, then it’s exactly like him. He comes, and he does the right thing,” Surer remarked. He emphasized how Antonelli has consistently performed well, even in races where victory was out of reach, demonstrating a maturity beyond his years. “He accepts if he cannot win; he doesn’t do crazy things,” he added, reinforcing Antonelli’s mental composure as a key factor in his potential championship future.
Among other endorsements, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has praised Antonelli, calling him “cool as a cucumber”. Wolff noted that Antonelli’s youthful adaptability is a significant asset, pointing out that his impressive demeanour under pressure helps maintain focus. “He’s just going with the flow,” Wolff stated, highlighting the balance Antonelli strikes between ambition and caution.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton also commended Antonelli’s progress, declaring, “there’s no stopping him and Mercedes this year.” Hamilton acknowledged the hard work and strategies that have propelled Antonelli’s success, indicating the strong competition within the ranks.

He stated, “I want to keep pushing race by race, keep delivering and keep enjoying it all the way and try to do my best every race, and we will see where we end up at the end of the year.” The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is set to take place on September 26, where Antonelli will seek to extend his lead in the championship standings.
