Conservative Party to challenge government funding cuts affecting Wandsworth
The Conservative Party has “instructed lawyers” to challenge government cuts targeting a Tory-administered London council, which figures claim total 40 per cent, reports BritPanorama.
These significant funding reductions have compelled Wandsworth to consider raising its local council tax by 94 per cent, according to Kemi Badenoch, a senior Conservative figure.
During her appearance on BBC Two’s Newsnight, Badenoch accused the Government of intentionally withholding public funds from non-Labour regions and reallocating those resources to Labour-voting areas, a claim that underscores her party’s frustrations.
Badenoch articulated her concerns, stating, “I think it is outrageous that Wandsworth Council is having to put up council tax. But they’re not doing it because they want to.” She added that the government has effectively removed 40 per cent of their funding.
She continued, “What it looks like Labour is doing is taking money from areas that don’t vote Labour and giving it to places that do vote Labour. And I think that’s completely wrong. I think it is outrageous. So we’re talking to lawyers.”
Discussing Labour’s handling of finances, she remarked, “Andy Burnham has not found 40 per cent of anything to cut, but he’s asking Wandsworth to do that. I don’t think that’s fair. I don’t think that’s right.”
Wandsworth has historically maintained a low council tax rate and is among a handful of councils granted two-year “funding realignment powers,” allowing them to increase council tax beyond the 5 per cent threshold.
Badenoch expressed concern regarding the potential near doubling of council tax, noting, “If you suddenly have a nearly 100 per cent increase in your council tax, you would be extremely worried. Families have budgets. Just because on average it’s lower than somewhere else doesn’t mean that people are going to be able to afford it.”
She challenged Burnham further by questioning why such significant cuts had not been identified in the welfare bill, underscoring her party’s stance on fair distribution of funds, stating, “Right now it’s about the principle of it: that you don’t just take money from areas because they’re not voting for you and give them elsewhere.”
Badenoch insisted that the Conservatives “would never” impose a 40 per cent budget cut on councils based on voting patterns. Wandsworth transitioned from Conservative control, which lasted from 1978 to 2022, to Labour, now holding no overall control following this year’s local elections, where the Conservatives emerged marginally as the largest party.
The Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government has been approached for comment on this developing situation.
