UK government to distribute £100 energy bill payments to 20 million households this winter

Around 20 million households across the UK will receive a £100 discount from their energy bills this winter, chancellor John Healey has confirmed at the Autumn Budget, reports BritPanorama.

The assistance will provide certain households with an automatic rebate directly to their bank accounts, a measure expected to cost the government £2.6 billion.

Eligibility for the payments is limited to households in council tax bands A to D.

During his Budget speech, Mr Healey stated, “Let me say this to families at home. I know that with the conflict in the Middle East, rising energy bills are a real worry. I know that people look to Government at times like this, not to solve all their problems, but to give them a bit of breathing space.”

“So today I’m taking one further step. This winter, for 20 million households in council tax bands A to D, I am announcing a £100 energy payment for households, paid directly into people’s bank accounts to deal with rising energy bills.

“That’s a £2.6 billion scheme to take the pressure off in the coldest months and see people through to the spring.”

Additionally, the chancellor indicated that funding would also be made available to the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, urging them to implement similar measures.

Mr Healey remarked that he was presenting his Budget “at a time when global uncertainties and pressures are swirling worldwide and hitting people here in Britain.”

The ongoing conflict in Iran has exacerbated the challenges faced by the UK economy, leading to rising inflation as a result of increased oil and gas prices.

To fund this new energy bill policy, the government announced that banks will incur an additional 3 percent on the Bank Surcharge starting in January, effective for a duration of 15 months.

Mr Healey noted that the UK’s leading banks “make a huge contribution to this country, in the tax they pay, in the jobs, industry, and investment they support.”

However, he added that in light of current global economic challenges, there is an expectation for them to assist in providing relief for British families.

How to check your council tax band

Households can confirm their eligibility for the £100 energy bill payment by using the government’s postcode checker service, which unfortunately went offline following the Budget announcement.

There are eight possible council tax bands ranging from A to I, with the payment applying to households in the first four.

The property’s band is determined by its valuation, yet there has been considerable criticism of this system, as the last comprehensive valuation occurred in 1991.

The implications of these financial measures will likely be closely monitored as winter approaches.
