Nigel Farage addresses Tommy Robinson’s harassment conviction

Nigel Farage has stated that Reform UK is unable to monitor members who back Tommy Robinson, despite describing the conduct that led to his harassment conviction as “very wrong”, reports BritPanorama.

Robinson, who identifies as Stephen Lennon, was convicted of harassing two journalists, which has raised concerns about the implications for freedom of expression amidst ongoing public debates. The conviction may result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

Prosecutors labeled the 43-year-old as a “bully” after the two journalists, Andrew Young and Jacob Dirnhuber of the Daily Mail, reported experiencing heightened security measures due to fear of potential vigilante attacks.

At a recent press conference, Farage was pressed on whether he endorsed the support Robinson receives from some Reform party members. He derided the idea of controlling members’ opinions, quipping, “Oh no, I think Reform members should be … I think we should brainwash them.”

Despite his sarcasm, Farage acknowledged, “People have different opinions,” suggesting that liking an online post is not indicative of a full commitment to any particular agenda. He reiterated his disapproval of Robinson, previously describing him as “thuggish” and emphasizing Reform UK’s goal to win the next general election without aligning with controversial figures.

While the party grapples with internal divisions regarding Robinson’s supporters, the implications of his conviction on public sentiment and political alignments remain to be seen.
