Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr refuse to support Ceuta amid migrant crisis
Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr did not participate in a show of support for Ceuta during their match against Elche, after the Spanish enclave experienced significant challenges due to a surge of illegal migrants, reports BritPanorama.
As Real Madrid players emerged for the match, many donned t-shirts emblazoned with the phrase “todos somos Caballas,” meaning “we are all Ceutans” in English. However, Mbappe, Vinicius, and Ibrahima Konate opted not to fully participate in this gesture of solidarity.
The trio was seen wearing their shirts incorrectly, obscuring the Spanish phrase, and quickly removed the tops after greeting their opponents, who kept the shirts on. They also declined to join their teammates for the customary squad photo that included the supportive apparel.
Despite the players’ reluctance to engage with the supportive message, Real Madrid triumphed in the match, winning 3-2, with Mbappe contributing the second goal. Supporters in the stands expressed their backing for Ceutans, unaffected by the players’ actions.
Real Madrid fans demonstrated their solidarity previously, waving Ceutan flags during a Champions League clash against Inter Milan. Their chants, declaring “Ceuta is not for sale, Ceuta is defended,” resonated throughout the South Stand of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium during that match.
