Calls mount to delay Freeview switch-off until 2040s
Reality TV stars have joined forces to demand that the planned switch-off of Freeview be postponed until at least the 2040s, responding to growing concerns that the terrestrial television platform could be shut down in 2034, reports BritPanorama.
Stars including Gabby Allen, known for her roles in ITV’s Love Island and Celebrity Big Brother, have expressed their fears for the millions of households that depend on the service for connectivity. Allen stated, “Millions of households still rely on these services to stay connected.”
Emily Miller, another participant from Too Hot to Handle, echoed these concerns, emphasizing the impact on vulnerable populations, saying, “I really don’t think millions of people, including the older generation and people who simply can’t afford other means of staying connected, should lose access to it.”
Ministers are currently consulting on plans to discontinue traditional terrestrial broadcasts in favor of internet-based delivery, with potential timelines for the switch-off varying between 2034 and 2044. Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed his worry about the proposals during a recent session with MPs, acknowledging that many of his constituents relied on Freeview.
Burnham remarked, “I know some of my constituents in Makerfield rely on Freeview. There is perhaps an opportunity to look at this as part of the BBC Charter renewal process. I recognise it’s a genuine issue…let me have a proper look at it.”
Polling reflects public sentiment, with approximately 80% of respondents indicating they would be upset if the switch-off occurred as scheduled in 2034. Nearly 70% believed that any government proceeding with such a decision would be out of touch with everyday citizens. A spokesperson for the Save Free TV campaign stated, “The Prime Minister is right to be worried, and the whole country agrees with him.”
