Russia to close German cultural centers in response to Berlin's drone attack allegations

Norwegian authorities seized a Russian vessel in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard on Wednesday at the request of Ukraine’s Naftogaz, reports BritPanorama.

This action is part of a global effort to enforce a $4.22 billion arbitration award and follows a European initiative aimed at confiscating vessels associated with Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, which allegedly contravenes international sanctions.

Russia says German cultural presence is over

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that cultural centers belonging to Germany’s Goethe-Institut would be closed in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Yekaterinburg. He stated that any further response would indicate a lack of “self-respect” on Russia’s part.

At the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Lavrov remarked that Germany “could not have failed to understand” that the closure of Russian House signifies the end of their cultural presence in Russia.

In another incident, a drone laden with explosives was discovered near a Ukrainian aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4 and was subsequently defused. The airport is a major international freight hub providing logistical support to Ukraine.

EU working on response after attempted Russian attack

European Union ministers met on Wednesday to deliberate on an appropriate response to the attempted drone attack but faced challenges in finding new strategies that did not involve military action.

The EU has enacted nearly two dozen packages of sanctions against Russia in relation to the war in Ukraine, targeting over 3,000 officials, oligarchs, and companies, encompassing banks, energy firms, and drone manufacturers.

Germany has maintained that it is “not at war” but has become a “daily target” of Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics.

Denmark sounds alarm about Russian sabotage plans

Danish security services issued warnings regarding potential Russian sabotage efforts against the country’s defense industry, with indications of specific planning observed, according to Emil Græsholm, head of counterintelligence at the Danish national security and intelligence service PET.

The primary targets are businesses in the defense sector, particularly those supplying military components to Ukraine, Græsholm noted.

Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto described the incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport as “a very serious act that could have very grave consequences.”

Despite these threats, he affirmed that Italy remains committed to assisting Kyiv, as the government considers sending SAMP/T air defense batteries. However, he acknowledged that limited weapons production capacity is hindering efforts to provide additional support to Ukraine.
