Kemi Badenoch reshuffles shadow cabinet, replacing Mel Stride with Andrew Griffith
Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has ruthlessly sacked her shadow chancellor Sir Mel Stride and replaced him with Andrew Griffith, one of the architects of Liz Truss’s disastrous mini-Budget, reports BritPanorama.
The new shadow chancellor, Griffith, previously served as financial secretary to the Treasury when the mini-Budget triggered turmoil in the gilt market, leading to significant economic fallout. His appointment suggests a shift toward a more aggressive economic strategy following Stride’s more cautious approach.
In a broader reshuffle, Badenoch has also dismissed Dame Priti Patel as shadow foreign secretary, appointing Tom Tugendhat in her place. Additionally, Stuart Andrew has left his role as shadow health secretary as the party seeks to regain ground against Labour’s handling of the NHS.
These changes come amid concerns over the performance of Badenoch’s top team, with the leader aiming to rejuvenate the party’s posture just as Sir James Cleverly has resigned to pursue the London mayoralty.
Following Stride’s departure, Griffith’s appointment positions him as a pivotal figure steering Conservative economic policy. Party sources indicate that Badenoch is dedicated to forging a new economic team focused on growth and fiscal responsibility.
A senior Conservative source noted, “Kemi is changing the way the Conservative Party approaches economic policy and creating a new economic leadership team for the next phase, focused on growth, higher living standards and fiscal credibility.” Griffith brings business experience to the role, while Claire Coutinho will serve as his deputy before her maternity leave.
Despite Stride’s previous efforts to stabilize the party’s economic messaging, Badenoch appears committed to a bolder direction, moving away from cautious strategies. Stride himself remarked on the need for radical, deliverable solutions from the next Conservative government.
In her statement, Badenoch acknowledged Stride’s contributions, saying, “He helped us steady the ship, rebuild economic credibility, and become an effective opposition.” The reshuffle indicates a deliberate effort to enact a decisive change in the Conservative Party’s economic approach, reflecting Badenoch’s ambitions for the upcoming electoral challenges ahead.
