Kemi Badenoch reshuffles Conservative Shadow Cabinet
Kemi Badenoch has moved Priti Patel out of her Shadow Cabinet as she launches a major reshuffle of her top Tory team, reports BritPanorama.
The former Home Secretary will be replaced as Shadow Foreign Secretary by Tom Tugendhat, who is making a return to the frontbench after being on the backbenches since finishing fourth in the 2024 Tory leadership contest, which was ultimately won by Badenoch.
Dame Priti will instead become international secretary of the Conservative Party, focusing on building links with centre-Right parties globally. This reshuffle marks Mrs Badenoch’s first significant overhaul since taking on the role of Tory leader nearly two years ago.
This strategic shift comes as Badenoch seeks to revive the Conservatives’ fortunes and prepare the party for the possibility of an early general election. The former Army officer Tugendhat will now be tasked with sharpening the party’s message regarding foreign affairs and defence.
A source close to Badenoch indicated that Tugendhat possesses a strong credibility in foreign affairs, citing his experience as a former soldier and security minister, as well as his tenure chairing the Foreign Affairs Committee. The source noted that Badenoch personally informed Tugendhat of his new role while he was in Taiwan, where he was discussing concerns related to China.
Tugendhat, known as one of Westminster’s staunchest critics of China, has consistently raised alarms regarding the threats posed by Beijing. Additionally, he will work on refining the Conservative Party’s position on significant global issues.
Dame Priti expressed her enthusiasm for continuing to support Badenoch and the Conservative Party in her new capacity. The reshuffle is also influenced by recent developments, including Sir James Cleverly announcing his departure from the Shadow Cabinet to pursue the Tory nomination for London mayor for 2028.
Amid these changes, Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho is expected to step away from the frontbench due to maternity leave, while Helen Grant is leaving following her successful treatment for breast cancer. These departures present Badenoch with several senior positions to fill as she aims to assert a fresh influence over her Tory team.
