Warnings issued over potentially lethal ecstasy pills resembling Trump
A Dutch drug addiction and mental health institute warned users on Friday about potentially lethal ecstasy pills shaped to look like the head of U.S. President Donald Trump, reports BritPanorama.
The respected Trimbos Institute stated that several of the pills have been handed in recently at a network of centers that test drugs for users prior to consumption.
“Absolutely do not use these pills,” the institute cautioned.
It released a photo of the pills featuring a depiction of Trump’s head on one side, while the reverse side is stamped with “NL” and “Trump” on either side of a vertical line. One of the pills is green, while another is yellow.
The institute issued a “Red Alert” on its website and social media, warning that these pills contain a high concentration of PMMA, or para-methoxymethamfetamine, which is similar to MDMA, the active ingredient in ecstasy pills.
However, the effects of PMMA are delayed compared to MDMA, which could result in users taking additional pills under the impression that the first did not have an effect, thereby increasing the risk of overdose. The institute noted that using the pills “can lead to overheating with possibly deadly consequences.”
Spokesperson Anniek Groothuis indicated that there have been no reported cases of serious illness or fatalities associated with the use of this drug. “We do not know of any victims where PMMA was found in their blood,” she told The Associated Press.
The production, sale, and use of ecstasy remain illegal in the Netherlands, despite its widespread use, particularly in clubs and music festivals. A government report in 2024 indicated that approximately 550,000 people used the drug in a single year.
This is not the first instance of ecstasy pills resembling Trump’s head; in 2017, German police confiscated thousands of orange Trump-shaped tablets.
