A fleet of 18 new smart ambulances has been launched in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant shift in the emirate’s healthcare capabilities. Authorities believe these vehicles will play a crucial role in enhancing emergency medical services, reports BritPanorama.
The ambulances are equipped with advanced technology that enables live communication between medical teams and a central control room, which helps in directing ambulances to the nearest hospitals suited to each specific emergency. This system aims to ensure that patients receive timely and appropriate care.
Dr Salama Al Tamimi, executive director of emergency preparedness and response at the Department of Health, emphasized the previous challenges in emergency care, where ambulances may arrive at hospitals unprepared for the patient’s needs. “Before, the ambulance would just take the patient and go to a hospital,” she noted, highlighting the significant improvement with the new system.
The control centre, operational since December 2024, integrates various elements of Abu Dhabi’s healthcare system. Representatives from the Department of Health, civil defense, and healthcare providers now work collaboratively, monitoring factors such as hospital activity and ambulance locations through large screens displaying real-time information.
The new ambulances are designed to cater to patients with critical needs, including those requiring specialized equipment for conditions like major trauma or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Dr Al Tamimi explained that this advanced level of care allows for critical patients to be transported while still linked to essential life-support systems.
In addition, a dedicated series of ambulances for expectant mothers and newborns is planned. These vehicles come equipped to handle maternity emergencies, ensuring both mothers and infants can receive immediate assistance if necessary. They also include neonatal equipment such as incubators for newborns requiring urgent care.
Another innovation involves the accommodation of patients with severe obesity, who can pose significant challenges in traditional ambulances. Dr Al Tamimi explained the necessity for specialized bariatric vehicles that ensure safe and effective transport for these individuals.
Maj Gen Salem Abdullah bin Barak Al Dhaheri, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority, highlighted that the new ambulances represent more than an increase in fleet size; they signify a transformation in emergency response thinking. The focus has shifted from merely the time taken to reach a patient to how quickly specialized care can commence upon a patient’s arrival at a facility.
The development of this service is expected to reduce critical response times, exemplified by improvements in the management of serious cardiac events. “Door-to-balloon time” for patients experiencing heart attacks has seen a notable drop, from 97 to approximately 49 minutes, aligning better with international standards.
As authorities implement this integrated healthcare approach, they aim not just for efficiency but also for a system that seamlessly follows patients throughout their healthcare journey, ensuring that every stage—be it emergency response, hospital transfer, or post-discharge care—is interconnected for optimal patient outcomes.
