Jannik Sinner withdraws from US Open
Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the 2026 US Open, confirming that his persistent right knee problem has not sufficiently healed, reports BritPanorama.
The world No. 1 announced his decision via Instagram, concluding days of deliberation with his team regarding his fitness to compete. This withdrawal follows Sinner’s absence from the Cincinnati Open, where he had aimed to recover in time for the tournament.
Despite these efforts, the 24-year-old was unable to reach the required fitness level for Flushing Meadows. In his post, Sinner explained, “Despite having worked hard with my team and my medical staff, we had to take the difficult decision to withdraw from the US Open this year.”
Recent training sessions in Monte Carlo revealed that he still needs more time to recover from the knee issue. “We returned to the court and realised that I still need more time to recover from the right knee problem,” he stated, underscoring the ongoing nature of his rehabilitation.
Sinner expressed disappointment over missing the tournament, particularly as New York holds special significance for him. “I was looking forward to playing in that electrifying atmosphere in front of the fantastic fans,” he lamented.
This decision represents a notable setback following a successful period for Sinner, which included defending his Wimbledon title last month and winning the US Open in 2024. His withdrawal also means that Carlos Alcaraz will not face his rival in this tournament, potentially altering the competitive landscape.
Now, Sinner’s priority is making a complete recovery without hastening his return to the ATP tour.
While the hard courts of New York will miss his presence, it serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance athletes must maintain between ambition and health, as the chase for glory inevitably intersects with the harsh realities of sport.
