Tyson Fury doubts fight with Anthony Joshua will proceed
Tyson Fury has expressed uncertainty regarding his upcoming fight with Anthony Joshua, citing Joshua’s request for “more money” as a potential dealbreaker, reports BritPanorama.
The two British heavyweights are reportedly under contract to face each other in New York City on November 20 at the iconic Madison Square Garden. However, Fury’s latest comments suggest that financial disagreements may hinder the fight from taking place.
Fury took to social media to voice his frustration, saying, “Quick update for you. It doesn’t look like they are going to sign the fight, and it doesn’t look like it is going to happen, all because [Joshua’s promoter] Eddie Hearn and that want more money.” He further accused Hearn and Joshua of having already benefited significantly from lucrative boxing deals in recent years.
“They have already had that much money off Turki [Alalshikh] over the last few years Eddie and AJ, they have had boxing deals, they have had darts deals, they have had snooker deals, they have had everything,” Fury stated, adding, “And yet, they have got the audacity and cheek of flea-bitten rats to ask for more money from old Turki that you have had combined over the last couple of years.” Fury concluded with a belligerent dismissal of concerns, urging them to “keep on running you cowards.”
According to reports from Sky Sports, Joshua has already signed a contract for the fight, with Matchroom Boxing coordinating an official announcement. There’s a push from both Joshua and Hearn to host the event in the UK, although it appears to have shifted towards a US venue, largely due to the financing from Al-Sheikh.
The event is likely to be on a Friday night to optimise viewership and avoid clashes with major American sporting events. A press conference is expected to be arranged before the end of the month to clarify fight details.
Hearn has indicated that the fight’s location is flexible, stating, “Turki Al-Sheikh is paying the bill, and it’s an extortionate one, so it’s got to work for him.” Both fighters have faced warm-up bouts before the blockbuster clash; Fury had a straightforward victory over Mariusz Wach, while Joshua had an eventful fight, recovering from two knockdowns to stop Kristian Prenga in the second round.
The expectations for this bout have reached a fever pitch, as numerous factors blend in the lead-up and what should have been a simple arrangement now seems mired in complications. Such is the nature of heavyweight boxing, where ambitions often complicate what should be clear-cut paths to glory.
