Jorge died on Saturday after a prolonged illness, passing away in hospital in Messi’s hometown of Rosario, Argentina.

Lionel Messi missed Inter Miami’s League Cup defeat against Monterrey as footballers and clubs across the globe paid their respects to the 68-year-old. Players wore black armbands during the game, and the team held a minute’s silence before kick-off, with Jorge’s name prominently displayed at the Nu Stadium.

In a statement, Inter Miami expressed their condolences: “Our hearts are with our captain, Leo, and the entire Messi family.” Teammate Rodrigo de Paul celebrated his goal during the match by taking off his shirt to reveal a Messi jersey. Fans also took part, with one group displaying a sign that read: “We smile with you. We cry with you. You’ll never walk alone, Leo.”

Barcelona, where Messi established his illustrious career, held a minute’s silence before their friendly against Nottingham Forest. The club thanked Jorge Messi for his commitment and for nurturing his son’s early career. The Argentine Football Association also issued a heartfelt statement, mourning Jorge’s passing and expressing solidarity with the Messi family during this challenging time.

Messi’s former club PSG extended their support, stating: “The club sends its full support to Leo, his family and loved ones in this painful ordeal. May he rest in peace.” Real Madrid, despite their rivalry, expressed their condolences as well, highlighting the deep respect across football for the Messi family.
