Border chief warns of potential shifts in smuggler tactics amid successful migrant crackdown

Government warns of potential resurgence in small boat crossings

Criminal gangs could rapidly change tactics and eradicate progress made in reducing small boat crossings, the Government has admitted, reports BritPanorama.

Crossings have decreased by 43 per cent year-on-year, attributed to a crackdown on dinghies reaching UK beaches and intensified enforcement aimed at smugglers operating the routes.

Despite this decline, Border Security Commander Duncan Capps, a former Army officer, acknowledged in his first annual report that this achievement is “not definitive.” The number of migrants in northern France awaiting opportunities to enter the UK has remained unchanged.

Capps stated, “Recent numbers are positive. But this could change rapidly, particularly given the likelihood that organised criminal gangs will adapt their tactics and seek to drive renewed flows.” He emphasized the increased risks during the summer months when conditions become more conducive for crossings.

While authorities have made headway in undermining organised crime groups, Capps warned that these entities could innovate to protect their profits. So far in 2025, 14,561 people have crossed the Channel in small boats. A Home Office source noted that new policies are “beginning to bear fruit” but cautioned against complacency.

As the situation evolves, it underscores the complexities surrounding immigration control and the challenges posed by persistent criminal networks. The Government’s ongoing policy adaptations will be key in addressing the potential for renewed crossings.

The efficacy of current strategies will be tested in the coming months, as threats from criminal tactics continue to loom over the policy landscape.
