Mohamed Salah close to surprising transfer to Trabzonspor
Mohamed Salah is on the brink of completing one of the most surprising transfers of the summer after Trabzonspor officially confirmed negotiations are underway to sign the Liverpool legend, reports BritPanorama.
The Turkish Super Lig side announced on Tuesday evening that discussions with the Egypt international had begun before revealing plans for the former Reds star to fly to Turkey on Wednesday as the deal edges towards completion.
Trabzonspor posted a statement on social media confirming the breakthrough, writing: “Public Announcement: Negotiations have begun regarding the transfer of professional footballer Mohamed Salah to our Club.” The club later provided supporters with further details of the proposed move, revealing Salah is expected to land at Istanbul Atatürk Airport’s General Aviation Terminal at midday before travelling on to Trabzon later that evening.
Officials added that further information regarding the player’s welcome would be released through the club’s official channels. To accompany the announcement, Trabzonspor unveiled a dramatic AI-generated video showing a sweeping journey from the Egyptian pyramids across mountainous scenery before finishing inside the club’s 41,000-capacity Papara Park stadium.
Salah’s future has been one of football’s biggest talking points ever since it emerged in March that he would leave Liverpool despite signing a two-year contract extension only a year earlier. Saudi Arabian clubs had long been regarded as favourites after Al-Ittihad famously saw a £150million offer rejected in 2023. Instead, the 33-year-old now appears set to continue his career in Turkey.
Besiktas had initially been viewed as Salah’s preferred destination, but negotiations failed to progress, allowing Trabzonspor to move into pole position. Out of respect for Liverpool, Salah chose not to hold talks with interested clubs before the end of last season. His agent, Ramy Abbas, consistently insisted no decision had been made and maintained that position throughout the World Cup.
However, discussions intensified following the conclusion of the tournament, with Trabzonspor ultimately emerging as frontrunners for his signature. Salah departed Anfield as one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history after scoring 255 goals, making him the club’s third-highest scorer of all time. He enjoyed a glittering spell on Merseyside, winning multiple major honours, including two Premier League titles, while collecting three Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year awards.
His final campaign was more challenging, however. After producing a remarkable 34-goal season to inspire Liverpool to the Premier League title under Arne Slot, Salah managed only 10 goals the following year as his influence declined. Liverpool have yet to secure a direct replacement, although Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola continues to be linked with a move to Anfield.
