Chelsea finalise signing of Jordan Henderson
Chelsea have officially announced the arrival of Jordan Henderson, who joins the club as a free agent after departing Brentford by mutual consent, reports BritPanorama.
The 36-year-old England midfielder has penned a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge. He is the second veteran player acquired by manager Xabi Alonso this summer, following the recruitment of 35-year-old Danny Welbeck.
These signings reflect a significant shift in Chelsea’s transfer policy; the club has not fielded anyone aged over 30 for the past two seasons and has refrained from spending on players of that age for four years.
Alonso is believed to be the driving force behind this new direction, aiming to inject seasoned know-how into a squad perceived as lacking sufficient experience. Henderson expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, citing the quality of the squad and his respect for the manager.
“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” he stated.
He also highlighted the ambition of Chelsea’s ownership group, stating, “I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction.”
Henderson’s focus will extend beyond matchdays; he pledged to support his teammates to the best of his ability. “For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going,” he commented.
His approach is reminiscent of the successful strategy Alonso employed during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the club to an invincible domestic double in 2024.
Before that triumph, Leverkusen had the Bundesliga’s second youngest squad and was better known for developing talent than for winning silverware. Alonso’s tenure saw the club acquire older players to foster a winning mentality, including Granit Xhaka and Jonas Hofmann.
The parallels with Chelsea are evident, particularly after their disappointing finish last season raised concerns about leadership within the dressing room.
In a separate development, Chelsea have reached an agreement with Como for the transfer of Trevoh Chalobah, valued at an initial £25.7 million, with additional performance-related payments that could increase the total fee. Chalobah has agreed to personal terms with the Serie A club, who are now finalising formalities following extensive talks with Chelsea.
As a product of Chelsea’s Cobham academy, Chalobah’s departure will be recorded entirely as profit on the club’s financial statements. This exit aligns with Alonso’s efforts to reshape the squad, balancing the integration of experienced players with the sale of homegrown talent to finance an extensive summer rebuild at Stamford Bridge.
