Kemi Badenoch calls for emergency laws to keep dangerous prisoners incarcerated
Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative Party leader, is set to demand emergency legislation to prevent dangerous prisoners from being released early from prison, reports BritPanorama.
Her call comes amidst concerns over a potential early release scheme that could apply to violent offenders, including those convicted of serious crimes such as murder and rape. Badenoch urged Labour’s Andy Burnham to take immediate action to ensure that these individuals remain behind bars.
Starting September 2, thousands of prisoners are scheduled for release after serving one-third of their sentences as part of an initiative aimed at alleviating the overcrowding crisis in the UK prisons. Previously, under the government led by Sir Keir Starmer, the threshold for automatic early release was lowered from half to one-third, prompting concerns from various quarters about public safety.
Current reports indicate there are approximately 3,000 unoccupied prison spaces across the country. However, the Prime Minister had previously committed to pausing the early release scheme due to public outcry, particularly related to the potential release of the individuals responsible for the death of PC Andrew Harper in 2020. Following criticism from Harper’s widow, who described the possibility of their release as “deplorable,” Badenoch asserted that only expedited legislation could prevent the immediate freeing of prisoners under existing regulations.
Badenoch stated, “Andy Burnham must prove he is serious by acting now to stop Labour’s Early Release scheme. Instead, he’s announced another government review. It’s not good enough.” She further criticized the focus on cost-cutting measures like reducing bus fares, arguing that it is overshadowed by the impending release of potentially dangerous individuals.
In response, Labour officials defended their record, stating that during 14 years of Conservative governance, they “shut 23 prisons, created 482 jail places, and granted early release to 10,000 prisoners.” They highlighted their efforts to increase prison capacity, including the addition of over 3,000 places, with substantial investments being made to deliver thousands more in the future.
