Gianni Infantino defends World Cup amid criticism
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has condemned critics of the World Cup for “spreading hate and misinformation”, underscoring his commitment to the tournament following significant controversies, reports BritPanorama.
In a lengthy social media statement, Infantino dismissed those whose negativity overshadowed the tournament’s joy and unity. He expressed regret for individuals who were “consumed by hate and criticism” and missed the emotional celebrations that characterised the event.
He remarked, “To all of you who missed watching kids, babies, grandparents, and parents come together for the beautiful game, I say sorry that the matches are now over and sorry that you missed all that joy and togetherness.” Infantino also directed his ire toward journalists, suggesting that their focus on negativity detracted from the tournament’s positive impact.
Moreover, he noted the challenges faced by the Iranian National Team, who had to relocate their training base to Mexico due to the US’s refusal to host them. While addressing criticisms of his reception at the World Cup final, where he was jeered by fans at MetLife Stadium, he stated, “While you spread hatred, we worked tirelessly to unite two countries at war,” referencing the complex backdrop against which the tournament unfolded.
