Enzo Maresca discusses Manchester City role but avoids Chelsea controversy
Enzo Maresca has refused to discuss his turbulent departure from Chelsea in his first press conference since replacing Pep Guardiola as Manchester City manager, reports BritPanorama.
The Italian coach left Chelsea in January after indicating a desire to return to City, where he had previously served on the coaching staff. Following his exit, Chelsea appointed Liam Rosenior and criticized Maresca’s conduct, stating that they felt “let down” by his lack of focus and commitment to the club.
In addressing questions about his departure during the City press conference, Maresca said: “No [he has nothing to say]. To be honest, I feel quite lucky in terms of my former clubs; Leicester and Chelsea. We did great jobs at both clubs, the identity was clear and the success was clear.” He emphasized the importance of focusing on his current role at Manchester City.
Taking over from Guardiola, who amassed an impressive 20 major honours including six Premier League titles, Maresca acknowledged the challenge ahead. He reflected on the difficulties faced by clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal after the exits of their legendary managers, noting: “First of all, it is a privilege,” acknowledging the pressures related to such a high-profile position.
Maresca, who was asked about the style of play he plans to implement, indicated that he aims to build upon a clear club identity. “Be aggressive off the ball and control the game, be the ones to impose our idea. Try to do the most important thing, which is win the game,” he stated, highlighting the need for adaptation in evolving football tactics.
Meanwhile, the future of key player Rodri remains uncertain amid interest from Real Madrid. Maresca has expressed a clear desire for the Spanish international to remain with City as they embark on a new phase. “There are always speculations around big players,” he remarked, indicating confidence in keeping Rodri despite the transfer talk, while also noting the player’s upcoming surgery and need for recovery.
