Cameron Menzies has reassured fans that he is recovering after collapsing during his World Matchplay clash with Ross Smith in frightening scenes at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, reports BritPanorama.
The Scottish star’s second-round contest was dramatically abandoned on Wednesday night after he suddenly became unwell while preparing to throw in the early stages of the match. The worrying incident brought an abrupt end to one of the tournament’s most eagerly anticipated ties, with Menzies having arrived full of confidence after producing an impressive victory over world No 1 Luke Humphries in the opening round. Just hours after the distressing scenes, the world No 27 returned to social media to reassure supporters.
“Thanks to everyone who’s checked in and sent messages. I’m okay,” Menzies wrote. The Professional Darts Corporation later confirmed the cause of the incident, revealing that Menzies had suffered from high blood pressure, which led to dizziness before he fainted on stage.
A statement from the governing body read: “Cameron Menzies was taken ill during his round two match against Ross Smith at the Betfred World Matchplay on Wednesday evening. Cameron experienced high blood pressure, which caused him to feel dizzy and subsequently faint. Following an assessment by the on-site medical team, Cameron was deemed well enough to return to his accommodation. We wish Cameron all the best and look forward to seeing him back in action soon.”
As concern spread around the iconic venue, Sky Sports presenter Emma Paton kept viewers informed while medical staff worked behind the scenes. “Cameron Menzies is currently unwell. All we know is that he is being seen to by St John’s Ambulance,” she said. The incident came after what had been an encouraging week for Menzies, who had produced one of the biggest upsets of the opening round by knocking out Humphries to keep alive hopes of reaching the World Matchplay quarter-finals for the first time.
With the match unable to continue, Smith was awarded a bye into the quarter-finals. The Englishman will now take on Gerwyn Price for a place in the last four.
