Images of Porro wrapped in a flag with green, white, and black stripes quickly spread online, sparking widespread speculation about the defender’s political intentions following the monumental win.
However, the reality surrounding the flag is considerably less controversial. The flag in question is that of Extremadura, the autonomous community in western Spain where Porro was born and raised. The Extremadura flag features three horizontal stripes of green, white, and black, which contributed to the confusion among users unfamiliar with the regional representation.
Porro, who hails from Don Benito in the province of Badajoz, has often expressed his pride in his home region. Misinterpretations regarding the flag’s significance intensified amid Spain’s triumphant celebration, which culminated in a tense 1-0 victory over Argentina after extra time.
