Argentina faces weather uncertainty ahead of World Cup clash with Cape Verde

Lionel Messi and Argentina could face a frustrating wait before their crucial World Cup clash with Cape Verde this evening, as forecasters predict unsettled conditions in south Florida, reports BritPanorama.

The match at the Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins, carries a 40 per cent probability of showers or thunderstorms when the teams are scheduled to kick off at 6pm local time. Meteorologists expect temperatures to hover around 87°F (30°C), with humid conditions, although the storm risk may ease during the second half.

Chief meteorologist Aaron Mentkowski of WKBW-TV Buffalo, who is providing forecasts for the tournament, confirmed he would be monitoring the fixture for potential lightning delays. As per tournament protocols in the US, play must be halted whenever lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius, triggering a 30-minute countdown that resets with each subsequent strike.

Weather disruptions have already impacted several fixtures at this summer’s tournament, including a match between France and Iraq in Philadelphia that was suspended for over two hours due to electrical storms. Mexico’s group stage meeting with Ecuador at the Azteca Stadium also faced delays, with kickoff pushed back by an hour following storms over the Mexican capital.

Argentina is aiming to secure their passage to the knockout rounds against the African minnows this evening. However, they must not underestimate Cape Verde, who earned a surprising goalless draw against Spain in their group stage debut. This unexpected result has established Cape Verde as one of the tournament’s surprise packages, and Messi’s side will need to stay focused despite potential weather interruptions if they are to avoid a similar upset in Miami.

As the storm clouds gather, it serves as a reminder that in sport, unpredictable outcomes can often coincide with Mother Nature’s whims. Will Argentina find their rhythm amidst the elements, or will the weather play its part in delivering another twist in this World Cup tale?
