Emma Raducanu fitness assessment crucial ahead of Wimbledon
Emma Raducanu is set to undergo a critical fitness assessment at 11am on Sunday as she seeks to demonstrate her readiness for Wimbledon, reports BritPanorama.
The British player abandoned her training session on Saturday at the All England Club, raising concerns about her potential withdrawal from the Championships. This unexpected decision followed a week where Raducanu didn’t book practice courts from Tuesday to Friday, heightening worries about her fitness leading into the tournament.
During Saturday’s session, Raducanu was seen struggling and wore a support bandage on her lower-right shin. The session was abruptly interrupted when she gestured to conclude practice after only managing four and a half games against world number 24 Anna Kalinskaya, who was leading 4-0 at that point.
Before this, Raducanu had completed a lower-intensity hitting session with her regular partner, Alexis Canter, but found it challenging to keep up with the demands of court coverage against Kalinskaya. Her management has suggested that the current issues stem from lingering concerns following her recent defeat in the Queen’s final to Donna Vekic. Nevertheless, the visible difficulties during practice hint at a more serious problem.
Raducanu has been spotted wearing an orthopaedic boot earlier in the week, which points to the possibility of an underlying ankle injury or another acute setback, rather than just the minor issues she was initially addressing. If she is unable to compete, British hopes for a strong performance at this year’s Championships would take a substantial hit.
Scheduled to face Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic, ranked 57th in the world, Raducanu’s draw seemed promising for an initial match on No 1 Court on Monday lunchtime, but the potential absence adds uncertainty. Tougher challenges await, with former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko possibly a second-round opponent and world number one Aryna Sabalenka lurking in the third round.
Jack Draper’s status also remains in flux despite his appearance in the Eastbourne semi-finals, adding to a broader atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding the 21 British players in this year’s draw.
As the countdown to Wimbledon continues, the intrigue surrounding Raducanu underscores the unpredictability that defines the sport. Nothing sharpens the competitive edge quite like the looming spectre of injury, setting the stage for compelling narratives throughout the tournament.
