Pochettino criticises reporters despite group success
US head coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed frustration at reporters for failing to acknowledge the team’s success in winning Group D of the World Cup, despite the United States’ 3-2 loss to Turkey in their final group match, reports BritPanorama.
The United States secured the top position in the group after winning two out of three matches. Pochettino chose to focus on this achievement rather than the defeat to Turkey, stating, “At the moment, no one congratulated us for finishing first in our group.”
He went on to congratulate his players, staff, and fans for their performance, emphasizing that the objective was to finish first, which they achieved. “I’m so positive, and I’m happy. Your questions are a little bit weird,” he remarked during the press conference.
The Argentine coach reiterated the strides the team has made, saying, “We are a much better team now than before. We qualified as number one, and we went to the next round. I need to remind you that we won the group.” The US will now face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the knockout stages, marking a significant milestone for the nation in World Cup history.
Despite the loss to Turkey, US players are keen to maintain momentum as they prepare for the next match. Defender Auston Trusty noted, “I felt like we had a lot of opportunities during the game. They didn’t,” highlighting a positive outlook as the team moves forward. Midfielder Weston McKennie also commented on the loss, suggesting that it should not affect their confidence going into the next round.
With the stage set for the knockout round, the US players remain determined to prove their strength. As the tournament progresses, it’s a fine reminder that in football, even amidst setbacks, the spirit of competition and hope for future success thrives.
