Rio Ferdinand calls for midfield change ahead of England’s clash with Panama
Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Thomas Tuchel should implement a significant change in midfield for England’s crucial World Cup group-stage match against Panama by introducing Kobbie Mainoo into the starting line-up, reports BritPanorama.

“If we play Anderson and Rice in midfield, we’re not a team that can control a game or do quick transitions through the pitch because I don’t think that’s their best assets,” Ferdinand stated. He emphasized that while both players excel at ball retrieval, their abilities to transition the ball and create opportunities are limited.
Ferdinand praised Mainoo’s knack for composure under pressure and his capacity to advance the ball effectively, suggesting this would be crucial against Panama. “His ability to beat the press first and then play or dribble through the press is better than Declan and Anderson because that’s part of his game,” added Ferdinand, reflecting on the 21-year-old’s rise after an impressive season with Manchester United.
Noting that Mainoo has yet to feature in the tournament thus far, Ferdinand admitted uncertainty about whether to replace Rice or Anderson. He articulated his preference, stating, “Before a ball was kicked, I would have played Rice as the holder, and I’d have played Kobbie Mainoo alongside him.”
