Andy Murray supports proposed social media ban for under-16s

Andy Murray has praised the Government’s move to introduce a social media ban for under-16s, suggesting it “removes a difficult part of parenting,” reports BritPanorama.

The former British No. 1, who has four children with wife Kim Sears, aged between five and ten, shared his own experience of limiting social media use. He has completely “got rid of social media” on his phone and expressed support for the ban as a positive step forward.

“My kids don’t really watch YouTube and stuff. We try and keep them off screens as much as we can, try and keep them outside, running around, playing sports and being active. They all like different stuff,” Murray noted. “Some of them do a bit of athletics, and they do all the school sports, like hockey, netball, cricket, a bit of football,” he told The Telegraph.

Murray explained that his own social media use had been excessive, stating he was “wasting too much time” on such platforms. He has chosen to use a phone with apps and websites disabled. As Wimbledon approaches, Murray will play a coaching role for Jack Draper, enhancing their collaboration after Draper withdrew from Queen’s last week, claiming readiness to demonstrate his fitness ahead of the tournament.

Draper, who has opened up about the struggles of recovering from injuries, expressed his eagerness to work with Murray. “His tennis knowledge is incredible,” he said, adding that Murray’s belief in him is significant as he looks to bounce back during the grass-court season.

As Wimbledon looms closer, Murray’s involvement will undoubtedly offer a tactical boost to Draper, particularly as both aim to navigate the demanding atmosphere of top-level tennis while addressing the personal impacts of injury and recovery. This mentorship highlights how even celebrated athletes can face challenges and adapt to their evolving roles within the sport.
