Rory McIlroy praises PGA Tour changes, calling them a positive step for professional golf

PGA Tour announces new competitive model for 2028

Rory McIlroy welcomed the PGA Tour change in format from 2028, describing the move as “a positive step for professional golf,” reports BritPanorama.

The Tour has unveiled a new two-tier system that introduces promotions and relegations in a revamped structure. The announcement was made during a press conference featuring Tiger Woods, who was making his first public appearance since a car accident in March.

McIlroy expressed his support for the changes, stating, “[The] announcement is a positive step for professional golf.” He added, “As more details emerge, it is encouraging to see the PGA Tour reaffirming the importance of meritocracy and creating a structure that will serve both players and fans well into the future.”

The upcoming changes will see the upper tier of the revamped tour branded as the Championship Series, consisting of 23 to 24 events, including the four majors and the Players Championship. Participants will face 15 regular-season events prior to a reimagined post-season, which will include a “limited series of elevated international events.”

Notably, at least the top 90 players in the Championship Series will retain their spots for the following season, while a minimum of 20 players will be at risk of relegation, with another 20 eligible for promotion from the Challenger Series. Tour chief executive Brian Rolapp remarked, “From day one, the focus of the future competition committee has been to build the best version of the PGA Tour and to do so in a way that reflects the voice of our players and the expectations of our fans.”

McIlroy indicated the importance of this restructuring in light of the uncertainty and division the sport has faced in recent years, which he noted has not served the best interests of players or fans alike. Woods echoed this sentiment, suggesting that the reformulated plan would be a significant upgrade for the sport.

Ultimately, the PGA Tour’s commitment to elevate historic international tournaments is a step aimed at unifying and advancing the game of golf globally. Though the details of the new format are still emerging, the underlying focus on competition and clarity is poised to reshape the landscape of professional golf.

It’s a reminder of how swiftly the game can evolve, but also how deeply intertwined its future is with the memories of its storied past—hinting at a fresh chapter where familiar faces and new formats can coexist in the spirit of competition.
