Micah Richards jokes that Gary Lineker will be 'irrelevant' as Harry Kane equals World Cup goals record

Harry Kane equals Gary Lineker’s World Cup goals record in dramatic victory

Harry Kane matched Gary Lineker’s record of 10 goals in World Cup history during England’s exciting 4-2 victory over Croatia in Texas, reports BritPanorama.

Kane’s performance not only solidified his position as a crucial player for the national team but also highlighted England’s competitive spirit in the tournament. His two goals took him equal with Lineker, who previously achieved this milestone during his illustrious international career.

Lineker expressed his delight at Kane’s accomplishment, calling him a remarkable talent. On The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker remarked, “I’m absolutely delighted that Kane equalled my record… it’s great,” adding a humorous note about alphabetic order, “I’m still ahead on alphabetical order and that’s all that matters.”

Former England captain Alan Shearer was equally optimistic, asserting that it is just a matter of time before Kane surpasses Lineker’s record. Shearer noted, “Harry Kane has seen Messi, has seen Mbappe, has seen Haaland all come on and go straight away and go, ‘Boof’, get the goals… it’s only a matter of time before he breaks your record.” In a playful exchange, Richards added, “H, just one more to go, please! And then this guy becomes so irrelevant! Thank you!” while gesturing at Lineker.

Harry Maguire, who was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad, praised Kane for his leadership on and off the pitch, stating, “You can’t speak highly enough of him. Because, on the pitch, he’s unbelievable. But, off the pitch, he’s a massive leader.” This supportive sentiment marked a stark contrast to Lineker’s critical comments following England’s earlier Euro 2024 performance against Denmark.

This time, Lineker was effusive in his praise for England’s start under Tuchel, remarking, “What a promising start.” Shearer echoed this positivity, commending Tuchel’s bold substitutions that spurred the team on during a challenging phase of the match. He commented on the necessity of these proactive changes, saying, “His substitutions were really refreshing because they were really positive at a really sticky time of the game.”

Kane’s form indicates a significant stride for England as they navigate the World Cup; however, this continued success also brings expectations that will follow him closely. It’s a potent reminder of how achievements in football not only reflect individual brilliance but also the collective ambition of a team striving for greatness.
