Messi's controversial challenge overshadows hat-trick in Argentina's World Cup victory over Algeria

Lionel Messi faces scrutiny despite scoring hat-trick in World Cup opener

Lionel Messi was at the centre of controversy during Argentina’s World Cup opener against Algeria, avoiding punishment for a challenge on Aissa Mandi, reports BritPanorama.

The Argentina captain ultimately scored a hat-trick, leading the reigning champions to a 3-0 victory in Kansas City.

However, Messi’s performance was marred by the incident involving Mandi in the first half. The defender appeared to be caught on the back of the calf and Achilles area during a collision, prompting immediate treatment on the pitch.

Replays of the challenge prompted debate among viewers, many questioning why Messi was not issued at least a yellow card. Polish referee Szymon Marciniak opted to take no action, and there was no apparent recommendation for a VAR review.

The decision elicited a strong reaction on social media, where fans voiced their frustrations. Comments ranged from assertions that Messi would have been penalised if he were any other player to calls for greater scrutiny of officiating standards. “If that was any player besides Messi it would’ve been red,” lamented one supporter.

Despite the controversy surrounding his early challenge, Messi ensured Argentina’s title defence began emphatically. He opened the scoring shortly after the match began, before adding two more goals after the interval to complete a notable treble.

The hat-trick not only highlighted Messi’s striking prowess, moving him level with former Germany striker Miroslav Klose on 16 World Cup goals, but also marked his 200th cap for Argentina and extended his record to 27 World Cup appearances.

This milestone came exactly 20 years after his World Cup debut against Serbia and Montenegro, where he also scored. Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni was effusive in his praise, stating, “At a loss for words about Leo. What can I say? He’s incredible. Everyone in football wants to see him and enjoys it.”

The victory places Argentina in a strong position within Group J, as they prepare for upcoming matches against Austria and Jordan. Messi’s pursuit of further records appears unrelenting, reminding fans once again of his extraordinary capabilities on the pitch.

In the chaos of the match, the blend of brilliance and contentious decisions encapsulates the unpredictable nature of football—a sport where the line between hero and villain is often surprisingly thin.
