George Russell claims pole position at Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix
George Russell has claimed pole position for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, finishing just over six hundredths in front of his former teammate Lewis Hamilton, reports BritPanorama.
Leading the British front row, Russell’s performance means Kimi Antonelli, the young championship leader, will start from third position. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc crashed out during third qualifying, resulting in a starting position of P10 for the race.
Russell had faced a challenging period, finishing P12 at the Monaco Grand Prix and falling to third in the driver’s championship, trailing his teammate by 68 points. His successful qualifying session marks a significant turnaround.
After securing pole position, Russell commented, “It’s been a great weekend so far. I feel like my old self again where every lap I’m doing the job, always fighting in those top positions. The last few races for numerous reasons haven’t quite been on our side, but I came in this weekend with a clean slate.” He added that Lewis Hamilton’s performance had exceeded expectations, describing it as a “real surprise”.
Lando Norris will start from fourth place, with the two Red Bulls separated by a position: Max Verstappen in fifth and Isack Hadjar in sixth. Liam Lawson qualified in eighth, just ahead of Nico Hulkenberg.
Hamilton, looking ahead to Sunday’s race, expressed satisfaction with his performance: “It feels great to be up here. Honestly, this weekend has been so difficult.” He noted the challenge of the session but acknowledged his role in keeping pace with Mercedes.
Reflecting on the tight competition, Hamilton remarked, “Normally, it’s ok to miss P1, but it had a huge offset… We are in a good position to be able to fight tomorrow. We have a race.” The stage is set for an exciting showdown amidst a backdrop of fierce rivalries and strategic racing, as drivers gear up for the challenges of the track ahead.
