Daniel Dubois mistakenly attends Ascot instead of Epsom Derby but arrives in time

Heavyweight world champion Daniel Dubois encountered an unexpected mix-up when he mistakenly arrived at Ascot racecourse instead of Epsom Downs for the Derby, reports BritPanorama.

Invited by his promoter, Frank Warren, to attend the prestigious event where Warren’s Queensbury Promotions supervised the DerbyFest fan zone, Dubois had to navigate significant travel confusion. Despite these challenges, he ultimately made it to Epsom in time to catch the concluding races of the day.

Dubois commented on the experience, saying, “We went all over the country to get to this place. It’s my first time at Epsom – at least I made it with a few races to go.”

The Derby was marked by the remarkable success of Christmas Day, trained by Aidan O’Brien, who secured his twelfth victory in this distinguished race. Backed at 7/1, Christmas Day decisively won the £2 million contest, asserting a formidable presence throughout the 1.5-mile race.

The weather proved challenging, with heavy rain complicating conditions for the field. Jockey Ronan Whelan managed to maintain a steady ride, guiding Christmas Day to a comfortable lead, finishing two and three-quarter lengths ahead.

King Charles and Queen Camilla were present, with the monarch sheltering from the rain while observing the event’s unfolding drama. Despite several fancied horses struggling, Christmas Day thrived in the soft going, showcasing exceptional performance even as pre-race favourite Benvenuto Cellini was declared a non-runner following issues at the starting stalls.

Christmas Day’s runner-up, Maltese Cross, displayed commendable strength but was unable to catch the winner. Jockey Whelan expressed gratitude and joy upon reflecting on his victory, stating, “The horse has done it so easy, he loves the ground and it just felt so effortless for him.”

This year’s Derby reflected not just sporting excellence but served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of high-stakes events, where even champions can face unexpected turns, much like Dubois on his journey to Epsom.
