Tuchel expresses concern over pitch quality ahead of World Cup warm-up

Thomas Tuchel has voiced his “worry and concern” regarding the pitch quality at Raymond James Stadium as England prepares for its first World Cup warm-up match against New Zealand, reports BritPanorama.

The Three Lions arrived in Florida earlier this week to acclimatise to the humid conditions. However, the pitch, which was installed just seven days prior, has raised concerns due to its uneven surface and poor connectivity.

Reflecting on the pitch ahead of the match, Tuchel noted, “I just saw it now. It will not affect my team selection because what I have heard until now is that it should be okay, and we want it, of course, to be okay.” He added, “If there are any issues, we can always react to it,” indicating a flexible approach should the pitch conditions prove problematic.

In a strategy meeting with his team, Tuchel outlined the plan for the warm-up match, stating, “The plan is tomorrow to play 45, 45 minutes with two complete teams, to expose everyone to the same amount of minutes.” He emphasised the blend of maintaining physical fitness while also aiming to bolster team cohesion, saying, “It is maybe more about connections on each side, more about connections in the back four, on the side, in attack.”

The squad for the trip includes a 27-man roster, featuring uncapped players such as Alex Scott, Rio Ngumoha, Josh King, and Ethan Nwaneri. Notably, these players will fill the gaps left by prominent absentees Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Eberechi Eze, who had a week off following the Champions League final loss to PSG. Tuchel reassured the team about the absence of these key players, saying, “I think there is no need to be overly disappointed and to carry it into the World Cup campaign.”

England will kick off against New Zealand on Saturday at 9pm, as they seek to make a strong statement ahead of the tournament.
