Andy Burnham considers snap general election if he becomes PM

Andy Burnham is contemplating a snap general election should he ascend to the role of Prime Minister, reports BritPanorama.

Currently, the Greater Manchester Mayor is viewed as the narrow favourite to secure victory in the Makerfield by-election next month, marking a potential return to Westminster. Following this, he intends to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership, positioning himself as the candidate capable of defeating Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.

Some members of Burnham’s team believe he should leverage Labour’s anticipated surge in polling numbers to establish his mandate from the electorate, thereby allowing him to implement sweeping policies from Number 10. However, internal dissent exists, with figures warning that many Labour MPs fear an early election could jeopardise their seats, irrespective of the party’s majority.

A senior Labour source disclosed, “Andy is considering an early general election. They are wargaming it. But Labour MPs would absolutely hate it. They are worried about losing their seats.” The source added that if Burnham were to become Prime Minister, he might need to reassure the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) that a snap election wouldn’t be called.

Burnham’s campaign has sought to confront longstanding criticisms of the Labour leadership. He argues that the UK has been on a flawed path for 40 years and advocates for reinvigorating the party’s association with its working-class roots.

Reports indicate that plans for his initial months in office are already in development. Buckingham Palace has allegedly been approached to ascertain if there would be any objections to holding another King’s Speech this year, an essential formality for introducing new legislative initiatives.

Additionally, a significant Cabinet reshuffle is anticipated if Burnham enters Downing Street, with current Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood likely to be appointed as Chancellor. Mahmood has been a pivotal figure in urging Starmer to establish a resigning timetable during recent high-stakes discussions.

While some insiders claim Mahmood negotiated her spot as Chancellor with Burnham, a source close to her refuted this, stating, “Shabana is entirely focused on her job as Home Secretary.”

Burnham’s team has remained tight-lipped on specific details of the proposed leadership transition, with key figures, including Labour MP Josh Simons, expected to find roles within the upcoming administration.

As the political landscape evolves, Burnham’s potential ascent looms large, suggesting significant shifts could be on the horizon for the Labour Party and its strategies moving forward.

In the context of shifting political alliances and leadership ambitions, Burnham’s moves gesture towards a broader discussion on democratic accountability and the challenges of navigating party unity in an era of heightened electoral stakes.
