Roy Keane and Bruno Fernandes engage in public dispute

Roy Keane has responded to Bruno Fernandes with a cryptic Instagram post, escalating a war of words between the Manchester United legend and the current club captain, reports BritPanorama.

Keane, known for his frequent criticism of the Portuguese midfielder, shared an image of a donkey appearing to roar, with lions in the background. The post was accompanied by a caption stating, “Too much attention makes a donkey think he’s a lion.”

This disagreement reportedly stems from comments made by Keane on The Overlap podcast, where he accused Fernandes of prioritising personal accolades over team success. Keane interpreted Fernandes’ reflections on his own performance following Manchester United’s match against Nottingham Forest on May 17 as an admission of self-serving behaviour, claiming the midfielder had conceded he passed for assists instead of shooting.

Fernandes contested this interpretation, asserting that his commentary had been misrepresented. He stated, “I’ve always said I don’t mind criticism. I take criticism from everyone and never reply to anyone whatsoever. What I don’t like is when people lie about things.”

Despite the dispute, Fernandes recently achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first player to break the Premier League assist record in a single season with his 21st assist in a 3-0 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion. He refuted Keane’s portrayal of his pursuit of assists, emphasising that his playing style has remained consistent throughout his Premier League career.

The unfolding drama highlights the often complex relationship between personal ambition and team goals in football, demonstrating how even the most accomplished players can become embroiled in controversy. As such disputes unfold, they remind us that the line between individual success and collective responsibility in sport is often blurred, making the scrutiny more intense and the narratives more compelling.
