Cristiano Ronaldo wins Saudi Pro League title

Cristiano Ronaldo was emotionally overwhelmed after clinching the Saudi Pro League title, marking his first significant trophy in Saudi Arabia, reports BritPanorama.

The 41-year-old forward scored twice as Al-Nassr secured a decisive 4-1 victory over Damac. This win ended his wait for domestic silverware since joining Al-Nassr in January 2023, with only the Arab Club Champions Cup to show prior to this triumph.

Al-Nassr’s success brought them the league title for the first time since 2019, finishing two points ahead of their rivals Al-Hilal. Prior to this victory, Ronaldo experienced three largely frustrating seasons, finishing second twice and third in the league.

Sadio Mané opened the scoring for Al-Nassr before half-time, with Kingsley Coman doubling their lead after the break. Damac managed to pull one goal back in the 57th minute, raising concerns among the home crowd. However, Ronaldo quickly reasserted control with a superb free-kick shortly thereafter.

The veteran star completed his brace with a close-range finish in the 80th minute, sealing the victory. This win was a relief for Al-Nassr, especially after a disappointing draw against Al-Hilal earlier in the month, where a last-minute own goal denied them three points.

Ronaldo ended the league season with a total of 28 goals, though he finished behind Julian Quinones and Ivan Toney in the final scoring standings. Celebrating on the pitch with his fiancée Georgina Rodriguez and their children moments after the match highlighted the personal significance of the achievement.

The victory also provided a lift for Al-Nassr following a recent loss in the AFC Champions League Two final. Ronaldo’s season was not devoid of controversy; back in February, he had staged a strike over perceived biased refereeing after Al-Hilal signed Karim Benzema.

With the title now secured, Ronaldo will join the Portuguese national team for his sixth World Cup, stating this tournament will be his last chance for glory on the international stage. With the prospect of facing Lionel Messi should both teams reach the quarter-finals, the upcoming tournament could offer a fitting finale to their storied rivalry.

In a season full of ups and downs, Ronaldo’s journey in Saudi Arabia serves as a testament not only to his enduring talent but also to the intense pressures that accompany the pursuit of glory in a foreign league.
