Aaron Rai’s unique golf style highlights personal habits and success
Aaron Rai’s distinctive playing style sets him apart on the golf course, not merely for his skill but also for his unique equipment choices, reports BritPanorama.
The English golfer is one of the few professionals who wears two gloves while competing—a habit he adopted at the age of eight. Rai attributes this choice to an early experience when he was unable to properly grip his club after forgetting his gloves. “It was terrible. I couldn’t play, I couldn’t feel the grip, so I’ve always stuck with the two gloves ever since,” he recalls.
Rai’s gloves, specifically the MacWet Climatec Wet Weather models, have become integral to his game. Missing them, however, is not the only unusual aspect of his equipment; he also uses iron headcovers, which might raise eyebrows among more traditional golfers. The practice began at four years old, when his father, despite financial constraints, ensured that Rai had the best clubs possible, taking great care to maintain them.
“He’d always buy me the best clubs,” Rai remembers, noting how his father painstakingly cleaned each club after practice. This practice of using headcovers has continued as a means of appreciating the value of his equipment.
In addition to his gloves and headcovers, Rai sways a TaylorMade M6 driver, which has been on the market since 2019—considered outdated by professional standards. He also opts for an orange castle tee, common among amateur golfers but less so among professionals.
These idiosyncrasies contribute to Rai’s character on the professional circuit. However, they do not overshadow his achievements; he has claimed two victories on the DP World Tour and celebrated his inaugural PGA Tour title at the Wyndham Championship with an impressive final round of 64.
