Rory McIlroy backtracks on PGA Championship criticisms
Rory McIlroy has changed his stance regarding the PGA Championship after expressing dissatisfaction with the course set-up, particularly the pin positions during the second round. As he enters the final day just three shots off the lead, McIlroy noted improvements in the conditions, reports BritPanorama.
The Northern Irishman reconsidered his earlier comments following what he described as more favourable conditions on Saturday. “In fairness, if I’m reflecting on the last three days, I think there’s been a really good balance of tough pins and then pins that you can get at a little bit more. I would expect the same tomorrow,” he commented.
McIlroy acknowledged the excitement surrounding a tightly contested leaderboard that leaves the Championship wide open. “It’s frustrating to us, but at the same time, it creates a hell of an entertaining championship. If I wasn’t playing this tournament, I’d love what’s going on this week, but watching and playing are two different things,” he added.
Leading the tournament is Alex Smalley, who has surged ahead with a six-under-par score after birding four of the last six holes at Aronimink Golf Club. Ryder Cup contenders Ludvig Aberg and Jon Rahm, along with major winners Xander Schauffele and Patrick Reed, are also in close pursuit. Smalley, competing in just his fifth major championship, has 21 players within four shots of him—a clear indication of the competitive nature of the event.
Smalley expressed the weight of the moment, stating, “Anybody who wants to play golf for a living dreams of winning on the PGA Tour when they’re younger. I recognise that I have an opportunity to do that tomorrow. I recognise that it’s on a stage that’s a little bit larger than most other tour events. I’m trying to downplay that as much as I possibly can just to make it seem like any other golf tournament.”
Defending champion and world number one Scottie Scheffler enters the final round at one-over-par after a third-round score of 71. He remarked on the unpredictable nature of the competition, saying, “Going into tomorrow, it’s quite literally anybody’s tournament. There’s a lot of guys that have a chance. Somebody is going to have a great round, and I’m going to make sure to do my best to give myself the best shot at being the one who has a great round.”
As the final round approaches, the stage is set for a captivating conclusion, with fortunes capable of shifting dramatically with each swing. For players and spectators alike, this Championship exemplifies the unpredictability and excitement that defines professional golf.
