Michael Carrick set to become permanent Manchester United manager
Michael Carrick is set to be offered a contract to become the next permanent manager of Manchester United following their stirring 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, reports BritPanorama.
The Red Devils staved off a comeback from their rivals to secure all three points, solidifying their place in next season’s Champions League.
Kobbie Mainoo, previously overlooked by Carrick’s predecessor Ruben Amorim, emerged as the hero for United, netting the decisive goal in the 77th minute.
Since taking over from Amorim in January, the former United midfielder has guided the team to 10 wins and two draws across 14 matches, with their only league defeats coming against Newcastle and Leeds.
United officials, including Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, are believed to be impressed with Carrick’s impact and feel that he has the support of the players, including key figures such as Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire, who are keen for him to remain in charge.
When Amorim was dismissed earlier in the year, Thomas Tuchel was seen as the frontrunner for the role, but he is now out of the equation, being contracted to England until after the European Championships in 2028.
Although Roberto De Zerbi had been linked to the managerial position, he has recently returned to management with Tottenham, further narrowing the field for the vacancy.
Julian Nagelsmann, Mauricio Pochettino, and Luis Enrique have also been mentioned as potential candidates, yet Carrick now appears to be the frontrunner, with indications suggesting he is likely to stay on.
After guiding United back into the Champions League, Carrick expressed satisfaction but emphasized the need for further progress to reclaim the Premier League title, which the club last won in 2013.
“In some ways [I’m proud of it]. And, in some ways, I think the work that’s been done and the players, the way they’ve performed, and the teams that we’ve played against and got good results against, I think it’s something that we can take a lot from, for sure,” he stated. “But it’s not something we’ve spoke about as a group really. I think it’s not something we over-celebrate. We want more. We want to be finishing higher up the league but, certainly there is huge credit deserved that goes to the players and the staff, for putting us in this position, at this stage.”
As United aim for a strong finish to the season, they still face Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton, leaving much to play for in the coming weeks.
It’s a reminder of how quickly fortunes can shift in football, with Carrick’s ascent marking a notable chapter in Manchester United’s ongoing quest for stability on and off the pitch.
