Both Labour and the Conservative Party are projected to experience a decline in support, as emerging parties such as Reform Party and the Green Party are anticipated to benefit from this shift in voter sentiment. Polling figures suggest a changing political landscape, with traditional party loyalties becoming increasingly fluid.
We are currently in a pre-election period, which restricts local authorities from releasing information that may be deemed politically controversial or from associating views with individual members or groups. This ban will remain in effect until the local elections take place on Thursday, May 7.
When are the local elections 2026?
The local elections will see all seats contested in 32 London boroughs, six county councils, six unitary authorities—including the newly-established East Surrey and West Surrey—16 metropolitan districts, and three district councils. In addition, many other seats in various councils will be challenged according to the new electoral arrangements.
In Scotland, the elections will be particularly pivotal, with all 129 seats up for election in the Scottish Parliament. Meanwhile, Wales is expanding its parliamentary seats from 60 to 96, alongside an introduction of a new electoral system.
Voter participation is crucial; however, it is important to note that the deadline to register for these elections has now passed, having closed on April 20.
