Major earthquake strikes Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture

A major earthquake struck Japan’s southern Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday, sparking tsunami warnings in the region, reports BritPanorama.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the earthquake registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 at a depth of 10 kilometers, placing it at the highest end of the seismic intensity scale.

The Cabinet Office’s Disaster Management Division indicated the earthquake occurred at approximately 4.27 p.m. local time (3:27 a.m. ET), prompting a tsunami advisory for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas issued minutes later.

Authorities advised residents to evacuate coastal areas immediately and to remain away until the advisory was lifted. The full impact of the earthquake on the ground remains unclear.

As the situation develops, officials continue to assess potential damages and risks associated with the tsunami advisory. The implications of such seismic events have long-term considerations for Japan’s disaster preparedness and response strategies.

In emergencies of this scale, swift communication and effective response are crucial to ensuring public safety.
