Zverev's grandmother may miss Wimbledon final due to visa complications

Zverev faces family absence ahead of Wimbledon final

Alexander Zverev has revealed his grandmother could miss the biggest match of his career after visa issues threatened to keep her away from Sunday’s Wimbledon final, reports BritPanorama.

The German star secured his place in a maiden final at the All England Club by defeating British wildcard Arthur Fery 7-6 (7-0), 6-2, 6-4 on Centre Court. After surviving a tight opening set, the reigning French Open champion took control of the contest to end Fery’s remarkable run and set up a mouth-watering showdown with defending Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner.

Yet celebrations were tinged with disappointment after Zverev admitted that one of his biggest supporters is unlikely to be in the stands. His grandmother, who watched him lift the French Open title earlier this summer, has already returned home after reaching the limit of the time she was permitted to stay in Europe. She holds a Russian passport and currently lacks the necessary UK visa to make a last-minute trip to London.

Speaking after his semi-final victory, Zverev explained the complications surrounding her travel. “She doesn’t have a visa. She unfortunately has a Russian passport still, so…” he remarked, lightening the mood by suggesting he may need “some political assistance” before the final.

Zverev expects German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to attend the Wimbledon final and quipped about possibly receiving help in securing the required paperwork for his grandmother’s return. “It was great when she was there. I hope, or I know that our chancellor is coming to the final. Maybe he can help with a passport or a longer visa for her, and then she can stay a bit longer, but she had to go back after 90 days,” he stated.

While his grandmother had been able to see his memorable run to the French Open title, the United Kingdom’s non-inclusion in the Schengen area means a separate UK visa is required for entry. This makes her attendance at the Wimbledon final increasingly unlikely.

Zverev now attempts to win successive Grand Slam titles without one of his closest family members present. He faces Sinner, who previously denied him Grand Slam glory in the 2025 Australian Open final, adding another layer of significance to the upcoming match.

Despite the disappointment regarding his grandmother’s absence, Zverev praised the player he just defeated, expressing confidence in Fery’s potential. “He’s at a good level,” Zverev remarked, acknowledging Fery’s breakthrough performance and anticipated ascent within the rankings.

As Zverev prepares for the final, the true stakes extend beyond trophies and accolades; the emotional landscape mapped by the absence of family becomes part of the game’s rich narrative. Wimbledon offers a stage where victories resonate differently when shared with loved ones — or missed altogether.
