World Snooker Championship 2026: O'Sullivan set to face debutant He Guoqiang in opening match

Draw for 2026 World Snooker Championship announced

The draw for the 2026 World Snooker Championship took place this morning, and Ronnie O’Sullivan now knows who stands between him and a historic eighth world title, reports BritPanorama.

The seven-time champion will take on He Guoqiang, a Crucible debutant who secured his spot just yesterday with a convincing 10-5 victory over Jack Lisowski in qualifying.

This matchup presents an intriguing challenge for O’Sullivan, who reached the World Open final in Yushan last month. Should he overcome Guoqiang, he will meet either John Higgins or Ali Carter in the second round.

Meanwhile, defending champion Zhao Xintong arrives in Sheffield in excellent form, having recently defeated John Higgins 10-1 and Judd Trump 10-3 to claim the Tour Championship in Manchester. He is looking to become the first player to break the ‘Crucible curse’, a phenomenon where first-time winners fail to defend their title successfully.

Zhao will face Liam Highfield, who returned to competitive play last year after recovering from a broken wrist. The tournament kicks off Saturday at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, with Zhao’s match among the first to feature.

World number one Judd Trump will compete against Gary Wilson in another highlight of the opening round, while 19-year-old Stan Moody, the first British teenager to qualify since 2007, will encounter former champion Kyren Wilson.

As the tournament unfolds, fans can anticipate a blend of familiar faces and fresh talent, with substantial prize money at stake—£500,000 for the champion and £200,000 for the runner-up. The final is set for 1pm on May 3, with the concluding session scheduled for 7pm on May 4.

In the end, the World Snooker Championship promises not just enduring rivalries but also potential new stories, reflecting the perpetual evolution of the sport.
