Wayne Rooney questions Harry Kane's positive view on Bayern Munich's defending after PSG defeat

Rooney challenges Kane’s defensive praise after Bayern’s thrilling loss

Wayne Rooney has publicly challenged Harry Kane’s assessment of Bayern Munich’s defensive performance following their dramatic 5-4 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-final first leg, reports BritPanorama.

Speaking on Amazon Prime after the match at the Parc des Princes, Kane had described his back line as “outstanding” despite the nine goals scored across both sides. “I thought there was amazing defending even though there were nine goals. Sometimes the forwards will come out on top but the back line was outstanding today,” Kane said.

Rooney swiftly disagreed with his fellow England international’s verdict, asserting, “I love Harry Kane but there is no way he can be praising his defenders. The defending from both teams was really bad, I think he is being modest there.”

The encounter between Europe’s two most prolific attacking sides delivered the entertainment the expectant Parisian crowd had anticipated. Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot after William Pacho fouled Luis Diaz inside the area. The defending champions responded emphatically, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia cutting inside from the left flank to curl a precise effort into the far corner, before Joao Neves nodded PSG ahead with a glancing header.

Michael Olise produced a moment of magic to draw Bayern level, weaving past several opponents before firing beyond goalkeeper Matvey Safonov. Five goals had been registered before half-time, with the hosts awarded a contentious spot-kick deep into stoppage time for a handball against Alphonso Davies. This decision, reviewed by referee Sandro Scharer on the pitchside monitor, appeared harsh, as the ball had struck Davies’ leg before deflecting onto his arm.

Ousmane Dembele stepped up to convert the penalty with composure, sending PSG into the break with a 3-2 advantage. Kane acknowledged the decision was questionable in his post-match interview, stating, “Overall, we look at their goals, the penalty was harsh but we could have killed the game earlier on.”

The second period saw PSG extend their advantage to three goals, with Kvaratskhelia converting from Achraf Hakimi’s delivery and Dembele adding his second at the near post. Bayern refused to capitulate, however, with Dayot Upamecano reducing the arrears before Diaz finished into the far corner following an excellent pass from Kane.

The England captain remains confident ahead of the return fixture at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, 6 May. “We go to the Allianz with nothing to lose, we’re at our best when we’re intense and physical,” Kane said. “It’ll be who takes their moments next week; with the crowd behind us, we hope that can push us over the line.”

The victors will meet either Arsenal or Atletico Madrid in the Budapest final. As the teams prepare for the return leg, the ongoing discourse about the defensive frailties serves as a harsh reminder of the fine line between glory and disappointment in knockout football.
