Tyler Fletcher receives late call-up to Scotland’s World Cup squad
Manchester United youngster Tyler Fletcher has been given a late call-up to Scotland’s World Cup squad after Billy Gilmour had to pull out injured, reports BritPanorama.
The 19-year-old made his international debut as a halftime substitute in Saturday’s 4-1 friendly victory against Curacao at Hampden. Gilmour sustained a knee injury during the first half of that match, leading to his withdrawal later that evening.
Fletcher, the son of former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, is entering the squad despite having only come off the bench twice for the Red Devils this season. He joined the training squad last week after being selected by manager Steve Clarke, alongside Hearts’ James Wilson and Liam McFarlane and Dundee’s Luke Graham.
Clarke noted the importance of Fletcher’s inclusion, stating, “It boosts our numbers for training given the staggered arrivals of those who are still playing domestically – and it allows us to take a closer look at some boys who are on our radar.”
Addressing Gilmour’s injury, Clarke expressed his disappointment: “I am devastated for Billy because he has been an integral part of our World Cup qualifying campaign. The timing of this injury is so, so cruel, and we all feel for him.”
Teammate Scott McTominay also conveyed his support, remarking, “Absolutely devastated for you brother. Football is a cruel game, and you don’t deserve this. Keep your head up. The players, staff, and country love you.” Such sentiments reflect the camaraderie within the team as they rally behind Gilmour.
Clarke has praised Fletcher’s impact during the friendly against Curacao, stating, “Everybody was impressed… I had no doubts.” He also acknowledged Fletcher’s potential, indicating that the player reminds him of his father’s standout qualities during his early days.
Scotland will participate in their first World Cup since 1998, facing Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil in Group C, adding significance to Fletcher’s emergence in the squad as they aim for a successful campaign on the global stage.
