Troy Deeney criticises England’s Nico O’Reilly ahead of World Cup semi-final
Troy Deeney has claimed England defender Nico O’Reilly has been “getting away with murder” at the World Cup, insisting the Manchester City youngster has escaped the level of scrutiny directed at other team-mates, reports BritPanorama.
O’Reilly, who has adapted to the left-back position after starting his career as an attacking midfielder, has been pivotal in England’s run to the semi-finals, playing in five out of six matches in North America. Deeney, however, contends that O’Reilly has not been as impressive as some of his contemporaries, particularly Noni Madueke, who has faced ongoing criticism despite his contributions.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Watford captain remarked that O’Reilly has largely escaped censure, despite what he characterises as average performances. “By the way, he’s been getting away with murder,” Deeney stated, adding, “For a player of his talent and ability, okay shouldn’t be good enough.”
In light of O’Reilly’s performance, Deeney suggested that England manager Thomas Tuchel may need to reassess his tactical options ahead of the upcoming semi-final clash with Argentina. With Lionel Messi expected to drift into the areas O’Reilly has occupied, Deeney advocated for Tottenham full-back Djed Spence to take on a more defensive role against the Argentine superstar.
