Trans athlete crowned 'World's Strongest Woman' amidst controversy and protests from competitors

Trans athlete wins World’s Strongest Woman title in Texas

A trans athlete has sparked outrage after being crowned “World’s Strongest Woman” in Texas, with American competitor Jammie Booker, who was born male, securing first place ahead of Britain’s Andrea Thompson, who appeared to storm off the podium in protest, reports BritPanorama.

Following the event, athletes and coaches have vocally supported Thompson as the rightful champion, escalating a debate about fairness and eligibility in women’s strength competitions.

Calls for biological sex-based divisions are gaining traction, as prominent figures within the sport weigh in on the matter. Three-time World’s Strongest Woman champion Rebecca Roberts emphasized that neither competitors nor event organizers were aware of Booker’s background prior to the competition. Roberts expressed her concern on social media, asserting, “Transgender women, people born male, should not be competing in the women’s category.”

Roberts criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the event, stating, “What happened this weekend wasn’t transparent. None of us knew. Not even the organisers knew. And when fairness is taken by surprise, trust in the sport begins to crack.” She concluded by congratulating Thompson as the “true World’s Strongest Woman 2025.”

Thompson’s coach, Laurence Shahlaei, also publicly acknowledged her victory, lauding her performance while reinforcing the importance of maintaining women’s divisions based on biological sex. Shahlaei stated, “This win hasn’t come without controversy, but I want to make it very clear that while I support and applaud people for being who they want to be, sport is sport and the women’s classes exist for a reason.”

Adding to the complexities of the situation, information about Booker’s background emerged from a YouTube video uploaded in September 2017, where he identified as a trans woman. Social media reactions have been mixed, with some users expressing confusion and concern over the implications of the competition outcomes.

The ongoing dialogue surrounding inclusivity and fairness within strength sports highlights the enduring tensions between evolving gender identities and established competitive categories. In a sport where physical capabilities are paramount, this event illustrates the difficult balancing act faced by organizers and athletes alike.

As the debate continues, it serves as a poignant reminder of the intersections between identity, competition, and the values of fairness that underpin sports – challenging the community to reconcile these disparate elements while forging a path forward.
