Tottenham seeks first team lead psychologist amid relegation battle

Tottenham has posted a job advertisement on LinkedIn seeking a Men’s First Team Lead Psychologist, just weeks after manager Roberto De Zerbi highlighted mental fragility within the squad, reports BritPanorama.

The north London club, currently fighting against Premier League relegation, published the vacancy on Tuesday as they aim to strengthen their backroom staff. This recruitment drive follows De Zerbi’s candid assessment regarding the players’ “mentality problem” and lack of confidence as they strive to retain their top-flight status.

Tottenham finds itself in a precarious position, sitting in the relegation zone with just five matches remaining in the campaign, having failed to secure a single Premier League victory throughout 2026. With two points adrift of West Ham, the club’s situation is increasingly dire as the season approaches its conclusion.

The situation worsened last Saturday when Georginio Rutter struck in stoppage time to earn Brighton a draw, denying Tottenham two vital points in their desperate fight for survival. The emotional fragility was clear on the pitch, with players visibly distraught, including Xavi Simons, who appeared close to tears, and defender Kevin Danso, whose error led to the equaliser.

The players’ lack of confidence has been evident since De Zerbi’s first game in charge, a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland. Following that match, the Italian manager openly acknowledged the squad’s challenges and their struggle with the mounting threat of relegation.

With the upcoming match against Wolves, who have already been confirmed as relegated, the club’s hope lies in a significant turnaround. The job listing outlines Tottenham’s ambition to foster a world-class performance environment at Hotspur Way, necessitating the delivery of evidence-based psychological support to elite players. The advertisement emphasizes the need for a practitioner who is credible, discreet, and capable of building trust with players and coaches, while maintaining the professionalism expected at the highest level of the game.

Simultaneously, the club has advertised for a sports psychologist for their women’s team. Striker Richarlison has previously spoken about the benefits of psychological support, reflecting on how therapy “saved my life” and encouraging others to seek help for mental health challenges.

In this demanding climate, Tottenham’s drive for psychological support underscores the deepening intersection of mental health and performance in professional football. As the club navigates its challenges, the focus will remain on whether this shift can help restore their confidence and combat the threats of relegation.
