Paywall introduced for Champions League final in the UK
For the first time in over three decades, football supporters in the United Kingdom will be required to pay to watch the Champions League final, reports BritPanorama.
TNT Sports has opted against broadcasting any of the three UEFA European club competition finals on free-to-air television this year, breaking a tradition that has lasted since the rebranding of the competition from the European Cup in 1992.
This decision comes at a particularly significant moment, as English clubs are participating in all three showpiece events. Warner Bros Discovery’s sports channel will restrict viewing access exclusively to paying subscribers of its HBO Max streaming platform.
Arsenal will face Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest on 30 May, aiming to lift the Champions League trophy for the first time in the club’s history. Before that match, Aston Villa is set to take on German side Freiburg in the Europa League final this Wednesday, seeking their first major silverware since 1996.
Crystal Palace will complete the English trio when they meet Spanish side Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final the following week. A victory for the south London club would grant them their inaugural European honour.
The prospect of all three Premier League sides potentially claiming continental titles has made TNT Sports’ paywall decision particularly contentious among viewers. European football’s governing body, UEFA, is reportedly dissatisfied with the broadcaster’s approach, believing it has violated the spirit of its contractual obligations, which mandate that “best endeavours” should be employed to ensure finals remain accessible.
This situation marks a notable public disagreement over broadcasting arrangements, as the contract is understood to not explicitly require free coverage, yet there is a long-standing expectation for broadcasters to maximise viewership for flagship matches.
Those wishing to watch the finals can subscribe to HBO Max from £4.99, while a full TNT Sports package costs £31.99 monthly across most platforms. This signals a sharp departure from previous practices where broadcasters like BT Sport and ITV provided finals at no cost to viewers.
TNT Sports will conclude its UEFA competitions tenure after the 2026-27 season, following a bid in the last rights auction where Paramount secured Champions League rights, while Sky Sports won packages for the Europa League and Conference League.
This shift underscores not only the changing landscape of broadcast rights but also highlights the evolving relationship between television access and sporting events, leaving fans in a state of flux during a pivotal moment in club football.
